The Crown is a charming 16th century inn that offers a warm welcome, excellent food plus superb accommodation and plenty of space for parties, meetings and weddings.
Set in the picturesque hamlet of Playhatch, and close to Reading, Henley-on-Thames and Maidenhead, The Crown is the perfect place to get away from it all.
Enjoy a roaring log fire in the winter, join us for a slap-up meal on a weekend, or settle yourself into a comfy chair in the garden and and relax with a glass of chilled wine on a warm summer’s evening. We’re also a family-friendly pub and children have their own menu.
The barn is the perfect venue for wedding receptions or business functions alike, and we also have ten stunning bedrooms if you’re looking for an overnight stay.

"We celebrated our daughter’s birthday in the Library function room. The food and the service was second to none and we would have no hesitation in returning again. We have eaten here in the past and have never been disappointed with the food."

Breakfast - the perfect start to the day
The Crown Rooms
We can pretty much guarantee a good night’s sleep at The Crown, although we can’t promise to keep the local cockerel silent – but that’s all part of The Crown’s country charm.
Each of our ten large double rooms have been decorated to give an individual feel. We want you to remember your visit to The Crown and we believe that a little luxury and a lot of comfort goes a long way. Good quality beds and linen, large walk-in showers, complimentary toiletries, plasma televisions, WiFi, plus the obligatory tea and coffee-making facilities – we take care of your every need. And if we haven’t, just say!
And after a good sleep, you’ll be looking forward to a decent breakfast. Join us any time after 7.00am (8.00am on weekends) for a full English, choice of cereals and toast.

We love good food
If you’re looking for a satisfying meal then look no further. Whether you fancy one of our legendary steaks with homemade chips, want a fresh crisp salad or are a strict vegetarian, we’ve made sure there’s something for everyone on the menu.
We pride ourselves on sourcing good quality ingredients that are then freshly prepared. In fact, you’ll find lots of nice little touches when you eat at The Crown – from our own special mix of olives to locally sourced chutneys – which make the experience just that little bit more special.
Sundays at The Crown are something else. Come and sample our carvery, a classic Sunday lunch with all the trimmings – you may be unable to move for hours!
You’ll be just as welcome if you’re popping in for a drink. For beer lovers wanting a refreshing pint, we have two of Brakspear’s award-winning ales on draught – Oxford Gold and Brakspear Bitter. We also have two guest ales available at all times – ask for a recommendation or discover both of them!

"Such a beautiful pub! Lovely interior, lots of space, beautifully attentive staff with really lovely food. We had starters of piri piri prawns, and the soup of the day, both delicious. Fish and chips all round for mains, excellent batter, beautifully flaky fish. Dessert of ‘the best’ chocolate chocolate cheesecake. Even the ice cream was really tasty. Great value for money, lovely atmosphere, wonderful staff and even complementary choc’s. Such a lovely lunch."

Round and about Playhatch
Just off the A4 and easily accessible from the M4, Playhatch and the surrounding area is well worth straying off the main roads for – and you’ll very quickly feel like you’re a million miles away from the rat race. But if you need an ‘urban fix’, Reading is just two miles down the road and Henley is only a 15-minute drive away.
Close to the Chiltern Hills, The Crown is the perfect place to come for lunch or dinner after walk or cycle through the most beautiful countryside. Or soak up the atmosphere of the life of landed gentry from times gone by and visit Greys Court near Henley. It’s a picture-perfect 16th-century mansion with walled gardens and has even older features, such as a 12th-century tower and a Tudor donkey wheel.
The very charming village of Sonning is just a stone’s throw away, described by Jerome K. Jerome in ‘Three Men in a Boat’ as a ‘fairy-like little nook‘. The village dates back to Saxon times and St Andrew’s Church is notable for its Saxon carvings. And if you’re lucky enough to go up into the church tower, you’ll be rewarded with a view of The Deanery, an excellent example of Sir Edward Lutyens’ design, complemented by gardens designed by Gertrude Jekyll. Sadly, the house and grounds (owned by guitarist Jimmy Page) are not open to the public.
Water sports are prominent in the area. Nearby is Caversham Lakes where you can find the Thames and Kennet Marina, Reading Sailing Club and Isis Water Ski Club. In 2006 the Redgrave Pinsent Rowing Lake, named in honour of two of our Olympic greats, opened. The facilities are used by the GB rowing squad and you might also spot Oxford University’s rowing crew in training for the famous Oxford-Cambridge Boat Race.
